no time for kids to have fun By sj
|
| I live in an area that has always had school parties for every holiday, Halloween included. Today I sent home notes that said the party would be refreshments only (25 minutes) and no costumes--the principal told us that "there's just no time for such as that" in our PK-2 school. We've not done a single holiday craft, cut/paste, or any of the just-for fun things that kids so enjoy. He has suggested that we could save time by cutting out their only 15 minute recess--thank goodness he dropped it when several teachers objected. And there's so much pressure on us teachers that we're afraid to get caught letting kids have fun! I've gotten to the point that I dread going to school--so, how must those little children feel? And there seems to be no avenue for changing this test-mania disease that's killing the joy of teaching and learning. Sorry, I've already been on this soapbox once! I asked a question to find out about other places, and here I am butting in!
