You didn't mention what grade, but I'm assuming third. I know this sounds small, but often nobody teaches the children how to lay the shoebox down on the construction paper and trace around it to create just the right fit. They just expect the kids to know or figure out how to cover the box on their own. Alot of my kids benefited from me showing them how to fold a piece of construction paper and placing it behind a main object in their diorama to make it stand up. They also didn't realize that covering the inside of the box for a background made it look nicer or cutting out objects and gluing them on first was alot easier then trying to negotiate later. In other words, if you want them to look really nice, go through them step by step. Good luck!
