i have been in that same sitution before. I have taken both approaches. The first time I let her take charge, and then next time, I did that same. That was until I overheard one of them saying that I wasn't any help at all. From that point on, I took charge right away. I wasn't a B**** for it, but it felt great to know that I had sort of taken up for myself. I just went in, stood infront of the room, did my usual introduction, and started the assignments. She sat back there, and I went back there, and said "When ever I start Reading, you can take your math group to the front to do thier work" She said ok, and we never had any tension between us. My day went great and like I said before, I walked out of there feeling like I took up for myself. I have ran into some teacher aides that do take charge and don't give in, so I just say Look, I am here to take the teachers place. I don't mind you helping me out, but please, don't do MY job for me and I won't do yours for you." Same thing that I was told when I worked for a doctor and he hired a new nurse. She told meone day " I don't tell you how to bill patients, and you don't tell me what antibiotic to prescribe" That left me spechless, and it put me in my place real quick!
