    I have the children learn the meanings of the words as well as the spelling. When I give a spelling test, I read the meanings aloud and they write the correct word. That way I get two grades for one activity, a spelling grade and a meanings grade. It really does help them to learn to use the words more effectively. I also assign a sentence writing activity that requires that they use more than one of the vocabulary/spelling words in each sentence. It forces the students to learn all shades of meaning in order to force the association of the words. By the end of the year, some students are able to use 8-10 of the list words in one sentence! It really brings out their creativity!
