I used Joshua T. Bates books by Susan Shreve with my 4th graders -- there are three of them. They really liked them. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Amber Brown series by Paula Danziger. I also read the Marin Redpost books by Louis Sachar. All three of these book series are 3rd-grade level. I am right in there with you trying to find books that are just right -- not too easy and not too difficult -- for my students. It's not an easy task. Good luck, Elaine P.S.
