I teach 4th grade and have been doing a spelling routine that parents just love but it is not helping students so...I am changing my spelling routine this week and I am going to try something I did a few years back. Each child will have an individualized list of words chosen from their notebooks or GR&W 500 high freq. word list. They choose their words on Monday morning and make a copy for home and a copy for school. I have "hired" some students from last year to come in on Fridays to be responsible for testing 5 students. They sit in a round robin fashion with their 5th grade "teacher" who will test them. EX: Mary your 1st word is below, Jacob your 1st word is friendship, Taylor your 1st word is beneath, etc... It worked out perfectly when I did this a few years ago, but back then I had an assistant and a volunteer to help me test. This year I don't have adults but I have some very responsible former students who will do a great job and are willing to give up 15 minutes of their Friday Free-time to help out!!! They will be payed with sweet rewards.
