    Desk space idea...

I teach 6th grade and we also departmentalize. So, to help the transition less bulky, I cleaned up all of my textbooks and renumbered in permanent marker 1-30, affixed a library envelope in the front of each text that will be assigned to students as a checkout system and put the books in a designated place for easy daily access. A master list of all assigned books are kept in my gradebook, copy to principal, copy to team teacher, copy posted in classroom, and copy on computer. Students in each class share the same book according to their assignment number. Students may check out the "numbered 30-60 extra books" if needed with the "numbered 1-30 remaining on shelf". In each class, a librarian is assigned to monitor daily that all books are in place. This worked for me and seemed to free up desk space and lighten the load of items students carried from class to class. Students made sure the texts were kept in good condition.
