I, too, am a 5th grade teacher. I write a journal topic on the board before they come in. They write for about the first 10-15 minutes each morning. They have to write at least 1/2 a page or they stay in for lunch recess until it is done. This gives me the very necessary time to take care of the attendance and other morning business. I also try to find time at least twice a week for the kids to share their journal entries, they love it.
