I do this too. Some ideas may include: Make enough copies of grade level spelling 6-9 and most misspelled words, begin by reviewing the weekly lesson objective(textbook), read the list of lesson words aloud, pretest lesson words, correct to see words missed, students generate their 1-15 words lists including the missed words or from the grade level spelling or from other subjects or other resources (newspapers, etc). I learned that most how-to manuals and newspapers are written in survival reading levels gr4-6. I thought this was interesting. Integrating from other resources are so valuable(student's own writing, reading from newspapers, texts, etc) and students write those words they do not know.

My students really enjoy this approach. How do they test? The room buzzes a bit (positive buzzing), students get to move about with their designated buddies or sometimes choose. Students are challenged and stretched while all work at different levels and demonstrating mastery. We do have bunches of fun. Have a super year!
