    Lunchroom

Don't make the mistake that my wife's elementary school did(when she went there). If the noise got too loud, the duty teacher would scream something and then lights out (there were a few tiny windows at the top) and SILENCE! the process continued ad nausem for all five years she was there. Couldn't anyone see it wasn't working?

Last year my teammate and I had some problems out of our students throwing things in the lunchroom yet no consequences.

We gave up our free time and went and monitored. We reserved certain tables, checked for trash before anyone could sit and then every student's area was thoroughly inspected before they could be dismissed. Had a great effect on our kids and the younger students. Soon kids stopped conveniently overlooking their messes.

Do you send kids to recess right after lunch? If so, let the quiet tables go first and then hold the others until they squirm.

I know it usually seems as though everyone acts like it is a big deal to get them out of there quickly, but is it really? When the kids know that the teacher/custodian/principal justs wants them out fast, they think behavior isn't an issue.
