You'll have to remember that at the beginning of the year 3rd graders are still like 2nd graders. They will require short, simple directions. This is a big year because students learn to write in cursive, learn multiplication tables, etc. Most importantly, it's a year when they must learn how to learn. Many of the strategies you used in helping fourth graders at the beginning of those 6 years will work well with 3rd graders. Generally, they love their teacher and are anxious to do well. I have high expectations for my 3rd graders and let them know what I expect. More often that not, I get what I expect. I have 4 rules: Respect Yourself, Respect Others, Use Voices Appropriate to the Activity, and Be a Learning Risk Taker. You may have more specific questions later. Let me know if I can help.
