This coming year will be my fourth year teaching 5th grade. I agree with the other posts get the book "The FIrst Days of School" by Harry K Wong and Roaemary T Wong. I use the techniques and strategies in my class all the time. I have procedures on large posters posted up in my room. All my procedures from lining up, going to the bathroom, to cafeteria behavior, to how they are to behave in class all the time. I dont' have rules in my class I have a Class Code of Conduct, it you say rules then they will always try to break them. I have a consequence chart and a board that they move the consequence themselves. I have a rewards chart and system set up. I make doing their classwork and homework their responsiblitiy. I am responsibile for teaching them and they are resposibile for learning and getting me the work. I send home weekly reports to let the parents know what they are not or are doing in my class. I send home an information packet, a copy of my code, a homework agreement, and other papers to inform my parents of my disipline and how I run my classroom. I make phone calls to parents who need to be aware of behaivor or lack of work. I am very strict in my discipline and I do it with love. 5th graders are wonderful kids to work with. I listen to the same music as they do and they think that is the coolest thing in the world. I make my classroom a safe haven for learning and for fun. They can for the most part read and write with some help of course. They can joke and kid with you and actually get sarcasim. I love my 5th graders and I don't want to ever teach any other age. Oh! believe me they will try you and push you until they think they have you. The hormones kick in with the mouths and the attitudes. I just let them know that I am the attitude ajuster. I tell me kids Boss(Me) not boss(them). They get it. I give daily reading homework, I am going to do the Paragraph a week assignment as well this year. They have spelling and vobabualary, sometimes math (new series not sure how that will be), and whatever I decide to have them do for science or social studies. I don't give homework on Fridays. They need family time as well as me. I let them know from the start that I love them all and I am always there for them know matter what. This age is real needy for the attention from the teacher depending upon the area they come from. Mine all needed that special attention. You will love them as much as I do. Just let them know whose boss and go with the flow. Don't let them see fear of they will use that against you. Have fun with them and you'll enjoy your kids just as much as I do. If you need any help feel free to email me. I am always willing to help fellow teachers, especially 5th grade teachers.
