YES, build a rapport with her!

I can really empathize with you. Having a student with an attitude is very difficult at times. I would do all I could to build a rapport with this girl. Be a 'good finder.' Catch her doing good. Whatever she does well, compliment her. Ask her about her interests.

My first year teaching, I had a handful of students who needed attitude adjustments. Two of the seven had been expelled from their previous schools. I found that if I talked with them one on one and showed them I cared about them, it helped. The only thing was that there were 7 students! There wasn't time enough in a day to attend to them all. I imagine with 1 student it would be a lot easier.

And, yes, if she is throwing little fits, by all means the parents need to be contacted. Think of what you would want the teacher to do if it were your child. It sounds like you have done just that. You are on the right track. GM
