I admit that I have not had a situation like yours. I do think, however, that the kids respect me more, or maybe I feel more confident which helps, when I am teaching something. I have noticed that it is very hard to get the students' attention during silent reading and busy work than it is when I begin by teaching them a lesson or doing a read aloud. I think teachers think they are making it easier for us. I have even had teachers tell me, "It will be an easy day." That phrase alone gives me the jitters because, if nothing else, I have learned in my short time as a sub to expect the worst and be happy if things go well. Mostly things go well but I think that it helps that I relax and don't worry if things are not perfect.
