First of all sorry you had such a bad day! I hate those days, they can really drag you down. Who told you that everyone was talking about you and laughing? Reason I'm asking is perhaps they didn't hear the whole conversation either. I know if we are talking as a group, we often start on one subject and then keep going. Perhaps they noticed your altercation and that started the conversation but then they actually were talking about someone else (maybe even the parent). And sometimes it is hard to fit in when you are one of the new teachers (no excuse for those who have been with your school though). It can hurt, but sometimes it's better to just ignore the faults of others and let things slide. Chances are if you confront them again they will be embarrased (as they should) but then they will also become defensive which will end up making you even more isolated. Is there anyone on staff you feel closer to than the rest. Perhaps put a bug in their ear, mention that someone told you that a number of staff were overheard laughing about your "incident" and how hurt you felt. Leave it at that and let them do the talking. Or write a short note (nothing too accusing) to your administrator. Something like, Yesterday I had a problem with a parent which I handled and afterwards another staff member told me that they had overhead a group of teacher's laughing about what had happened to me and insinuating that I always get into problems. This upset me and I really feel that it was unfair for them to talk behind my back and to say these things. I work hard and am learning new things everyday and would prefer to be supported by my colleagues and not ridiculed. Leave it with your administrator and see what they do with it. I don't know what the job climate is in your area but with what has happened and the fact that you already spend so much time alone perhaps you should look at applying to other schools in your area.
