I have a 6th grade class, and I tend to keep my library stocked with "tried and true" titles. It is not that I am avoiding controversial books, but I feel that there is so much out there to read, that they can still get valuable lessons out of non-controversial books. We would all like to say that the parents should be the ones to censor what the child reads, not a teacher or a library, but the sad thing is that most parents are either not aware, or just don't look into it. I try to stay with classics, or Newbery award and honor books. Also, books that are on the schools "approved" list. Some of them are slightly controversial (ever read Cheaper by the Dozen? many innuendos in that one!! although they are funny). That way I feel that I can defend my choice of books.
