I also am having the same kind of year this year. Out of 21 students, I have six that are REAL behavior problems. State test scores from last year were the PITS! I am very worried about this year's scores. It is so difficult to MAKE a student care. They would rather take a zero than perform the task. I have started two programs to try to help. One is weekly. If a child has no late work, no discipline referrals, and no classroom disruptions, they are allowed to have a Friday free time recess for 15 minutes where they can buy a pop or bring a pop from home. I have teamed up with another teacher doing the same thing so one will keep the inside students and one take the outside ones.
The other is called PRIDE (Pupils Responsible in Dedication to their Education). I have an after school party from 3:10-4:30 once a month. This is for the student that have gone all month without a discipline referral from ANY teacher, no late papers, all passing scores on daily work and tests. We do art activities, play math games, eat, play, etc. The kids that get to attend are the ones that need the recognition for always being good. This month we are going to Pizza Hut and making Christmas ornaments. They love it and each month I have a few more. I feel sorry for those that have to listen to me complain all the time. Unfortunately, THEY are probably the ones feeling guilty about the behaviors of the others.
