I agree with Julianne. Having a class meeting is like having the rain clear the air and make it fresh again. Whenever I feel myself or the kids being drained by a certain issue, then we take the time to talk about it. In our classroom, we had a student was was new and being picked on because she was quiet and awkward. It was really getting out of hand! The poor child seemed to have every child in the classroom against her.

Thanks to a class meeting and peer mediation, we settled this problem. My guidance counselor was wonderful, too. Two of my girls even wrote a letter of apology to the new girl at the end of class, telling them that they were sorry they had not treated her better and that they wanted to include her with their activities.

Like Julianne said, you really have to talk about problems. Get them out in the open. Otherwise, they seem to fester like a bad cut.
