I was surprised at how many of my 3rd graders came to me this year having never made a woven mat from construction paper! It used to be a standard 2nd grade project. My kids loved it. I cut the basic mat from 12x18 paper and cut 1 inch strips for them to weave through and glue the ends. They need to be taught and monitored on the first one and then you can do them for various holiday placemats, gifts, community service projects. I get extra mileage out of them by having kids glue one of their coloring pages on one side and words to poems or songs we have been learning on the other side before laminating them. Then they can share with their families and use for years to come.
