    I don't know about

activities, but how about hands-on and authentic? Use their own writing to point out nouns and verbs. Have them identify nouns and verbs in their own writing. Even emergent readers/writers, who write only the initial sound, should use nouns and verbs. It's basic to all language, so how about instead of creating a whole new lesson/activity, you just use what they're already doing? It sounds to me like a series of short minilessons.

Or, if an activity is what it's gotta be, how about using cut-up sentence strips and letting kids be little nouns and verbs? They could hold up their word, place themselves properly in the "sentence" and then tell what POS they are, and how they know. It's kinesthetic, engaging to a six year old, and everyone will want a turn.

I like hearing from first grade teachers who are shying away from worksheets. I think you're right on target.
