Things that have been in the mystery box include:
~Pages to their own word family books such as a picture of a ball and they write more -all words on the picture.
~A magnifying glass and a a-z page to write the room or word hunt.
~Scrabble letters and a number sheet 1-10, they make words from the tiles and write them down.
~Stationary (paper cut in half with a photocopied border) to write letters to someone in the building. They can only write a person once, and wait until that person writes them back.
~Fancy pens/markers to rainbow write vocabulary words or illustrate vocabulary words. (this is a new one for our science connection.) Students write their definition and then illustrate it and use it in a sentence.
~ playing cards to signify sight word games (sight word candy land) etc.

I have a bunch more ideas just need to put them on paper.
    Hope that helps.
The kids LOVE to open the box to see what that center is.
