Ok- The re-readings also help your higher end children with other ideas, like finding details, etc. However, if you feel they should be excluded from this re-read maybe they should "respond" to the story- find connections to other books- list examples of other stories with "cause and effect", (since we are using that example), find connections between the text and themsleves, and find connections between the text and the world. They could keep an on going journal of books you read, strategies they learned, author's craft, etc. I hope this helped on the high end.
