Math Notebooks/Homework By djdteacher

| What program are you using? I know Connected Math has a notebook system built into the program. In my class, I had the students keep a table of contents and just added to the list as we went along. Every page had a page "letter" so the students could keep the binder in order and quick flip to a page that is needed. I also kept a stack of extra copies of handouts so that students could replace any that went missing. Homework was kept in the binder because with the program we used, there is no text book with examples. Therefore, all of the hands-on activities were the only thing students had to refer to when completing homework. And no matter what program you use, I strongly recommend having the students take notes, whether it be copying it off of the board or writing reflections about what they learned, or both!
In my opinion, homework is imperative in Math. The students need to practice basic skills as much as possible. Again, depending on the program, homework components may be built in. No matter what, students should have some sort of homework 3-4 nights per week, and it can be a review of what was already taught. When assigning homework, I see how long it takes me to complete the problem, and then multiply that time by 3 to give me an idea of how long it may take some of the students to do the work. Our school homework policy gives students 20 minutes of Math homework per night, and I agree with this.
