Sticky Situation By Alf Abett
|
| You need to be careful here. DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT!!! First of all, have you documented his daily behavior? (dates, times, tardy, did he eat breakfast, etc.) I know this is extra work for you but it will pay off. What does your school handbook say about behavior and consequences of that behavior? Does he have a behavior management plan? (or do you have to wait until he has been tested?) Does he act like this at home, and if so, what does mom do and how does mom handle him? What does your principal do to help you? There should be someone from your district like a counselor to come and informally observe him and they should do it at different times of the day and in different subject areas. Also, is there someone connected to Special Services (for lack of a better word) like a psychologist that can come and informally observe to determine what might help you/him. You need to make sure that you have guidelines set up by you BEFORE she comes into your classroom and make sure your admin is on board. You may want another pair of eyes in the room when mom is there just for making sure mom doesn't overstep her boundaries. Contact your education service center for ideas/help if you need to.
