Don't be hard on yourself, sometimes funny is funny. If the student seems to withdraw in the next few days, pull her aside and apologize personally. Let her know you were wrong to laugh at her and do something special for her. If she seems to have forgotten about it, let it go. One time I had a student have one of those falls where they seem to go down in slow motion and take everything with them. Once I realized that the student was all right I completely lost it. I sat down on the floor of my class and laughed until tears were streaming out. The student started laughing too. Then the whole class got a major case of the giggles. I then gave my student a big hug and told him that I was glad he was okay. I then got up dusted myself off and said, "Well I guess we know what we want to write about during writing workshop today!!!" The students had great stories that day!!!
