My first two years I had groups of 30+. I was lucky to move to a district that has a committment to class size caps, so I have only 15 this year.

I think that there's an element of crowd control. Things I did to keep my large class running smoothly included:
*Hand signals to downplay disruptions (2 fingers means bathroom, 1 finger means drink, hand over nose means Kleenex, pencil in the air means sharpener, full hand up means help is needed, etc)

*Rules and procedures taught for WEEKS, practiced, repracticed, and posted with visual pictures (even in a reading grade)

*I kept a binder for daily tasks - one section a spreadsheet to mark absences, tardies, missing homework etc, one section for uniform violations, one section for parent contact info to have on hand, etc.

*A lot of classroom jobs - absent student manager to keep me free from collecting work for them, etc.

Matrix for tasks during small group / center time clearly posted on the board.
