Having taught first grade for over 20 years my suggestion would be to start with long a with the silent e. Then the following week teach long i with silent e; the next week long o with silent e and the following week long e and long u with silent e. There are very few words with long e with a silent e. I then teach long e with ee and ea with is the introduction to vowel teams. I them move to long a with ai and ay and the long o with oa, oe and ow, this is followed with long u with ui, ue. I spend one week on each on of these. I am also teaching certain consonant sounds along with these such as initial blends, final blends, ch, tch, sh, wh, th, soft c/soft g, etc. I think it is so important to spend a sufficient amount of time with each of these skills to cement them for the children.
