I don't teach it much either. When we first look at the traits we analyze pieces of writing that focus on each trait. I try to collect various pieces that work well to exhibit voice.
Of all the traits, this is the hardest to teach. The good writers already have voice, yet students who don't write well seem to decrease their skills and misunderstand voice when I try to teach it. They write sentences like "I'm going to tell you about..." AUGH! Makes me vomit. Next paper I'm going to ban the word "you" "tell" and "I".
