    Inference Ideas

    Clip to ScrapBook

Tanny McGregor introduces inference by bringing in her husband's old slipper and asking what you can tell about the owner just from examining the slipper. Make a T-chart with the kids labeled Evidence, Inference. For example, there is a pet hair on the slipper so the owner probably has a dog. The slipper is old and worn, so the owner probably loves his slippers and doesn't want to get rid of them-or maybe is poor and can't afford new ones, or hates to shop.
End with a formula for Inference like Evidence + What we already know (schema) = Inference.

Inference Game (This might be from CAFE Book by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser.)
    Give a sentence like:
My dad came into the living room, turned off the TV and frowned at me. or
My mom came home with a bag from the Nintendo store.
Have students write or discuss what they can infer... This can be done as a daily writing prompt throughout the year.
