First we do the Mental math and math message together. Then I split up my class for each lesson into 2 seperate groups based on a 3 question "pre-test" I give them the day before. My group that needs more instruction for the lesson spends the first 20 minutes working on the Math Boxes from the day before and then they practice math facts. The"higher" group for the day meets with me for a shorter version of the lesson- to make sure I discuss it all with them, but quickly. Then we switch and I spend about 30 minutes going more indepth with the lower group. We use manipulatives and do many more practice questions. The higher group is working on the pages that go with the days lesson and then I have set up extra enrichment activities for each unit that they can do on their own. Some are projects on the computer, center- based activities, and the extra activities and games in the manual. On Fridays, we do our timed tests and then the whole class has the opportunity to work on the "enrichment" activities.
