    I use a hundred chart. If something costs .39 and you pay with a $1. I have them put their finger on the 39 on the hundred chart. Then I ask them how much it takes to get to the end of the row. 1 penny (they put 1 penny on 40). Then I talk to them about counting quarters and ask where the next quarter would be. So how far to 50? They put 1 dime on 50. Then they go to the next quarter (so put a quarter on 75 and another on 100). Then they can count the amount of change.

    I'm teaching this skill right now and most are starting to get it as long as they don't have to use bills. I'm working on a few problems each day so that they continually review it. It's a pretty tough concept for them, though!
