    Math Day

I teach 2nd grade as well and am not allowed to "do" Halloween. I instead set up a Fall Harvest Party and we spend the day doing fall theme activities. For math I do what the PP has suggested with pumpkins but also take it a step further and do estimation. First we estimate with a jar of candy corn, then I have my students estimate how many pumpkin seeds will be in their pumpkin (a really small one). Then (and this gets messy and is a great place for parents) I cut open the pumpkin and the kids actually count their seeds and we graph the results. This might be hard with 26 the most I had was 18 but still could be fun.

Another activity we do is invented measurement using pumpkin slices that I've drawn. Students use their pumpkin slices to measure objects around the room. First they estimate how many slices their object will measure, and then take their actual measurement. I also set up a station with fall themed word problems and the students use whatever strategy they like to solve them. One year we also bobbed for apples and had the students graph how many they could get in 3 minutes. This was highly entertaining...especially with those students with loose teeth!

Many of my parents don't mind if I read one or two Halloween stories, and I found a Mad Libs book at Borders that has both Fall and Halloween themed "stories" that we do as a class as well. Hope this helps!
