Our literacy center time is called Reading Workshop. We integrate many areas of the curriculum into this time period, rotating kids through each of the 5 centers through the week. The children are divided into 5 color groups (to match where they sit on the rug in the group area). Every day during the week, the groups go to a different center until they have completed them all on Friday. The Reading Workshop Centers are: Listening Center, Writing Center, Teacher Time (where we spend most of our time during Reading Workshop), Math Center, and Science Center. Our principal is very supportive of this integration of Science and Math into the literacy center time, and it works very well. The activities vary each week. For example, this week, the centers look like this: Listening - listen to the "Animal Tracks" book and then go to the table and play "Animal Tracks Bingo"; Writing Center - Match upper and lower-case letters to pictures on cards; Teacher Time - in your journals, draw a picture (free-choice topic this week) and then dictate 3 things about your picture and then copy under the words I wrote (or write independently); Math - use animal stamps to complete the "Numbers 1-9 Chart"; Science Center - "research" an animal in "Your Big Backyard" magazine, draw a picture of your animal in it's habitat and tell whether the habitat is wet or dry and cold or warm. That's all we're doing in Reading Workshop this week! Hope that helps you with ideas!
