Right now we are learning about weather patterns in our hm reading book. I had the students pick 1 letter, and look up a weather word on that letter. They need to do research and come up with a paragraph about their word. We are then going to assemble an ABC book on the weather. I have left over bare books from 4 years ago that I ordered, so this is PERFECT for my class. Some of their words are Avalanche, Blizzard, Warren Faidley, Cyclone, El Nino, Hurricane Katrina, Ice Storm, X-treme Wild Fires, Tsunamis, etc. The students LOVE it, and are learning soooo much!! I also LOVE doing creative writing. My favorite Point of View writing project goes like this... I take an egg and drop it on the floor. After the students get over the initial shock of what I have done, I pass around a bucket with slips of paper. They must choose 1 slip and write about what is on their slip. They have to write from the point of view of that object or person. Some examples...The egg, the floor, the hen who laid the egg, the farmer who sold the egg to the store, the person dropping the egg. My kids LOVE this project!! I actually think I got it on pro-teacher. ANOTHER: Shoes. I collected ALL different kinds of shoes, at least 40 pairs. I had high heeled sneakers, spiked heels, soccer cleats, business mens shoes, ballerina shoes, kids sneakers with holes, army boots, cowboy boots, etc. Anyway, I modeled with the class 1 pair of shoes. We started with soccer cleats (this project is for building character), anyway, I asked questions like, who would wear these shoes. Then we created a sketch of what he would be like, where he lives, what he acts like, etc. The creativity was phenominal!! I LOVE creative writing!!
