Reading with a set purpose Recording observations and questions on graphic organizers How to listen to a response/question How to respond to a comment/question (talking chips work great for this) I give every group member the role of leader for the day to keep the discussions on task and I use both a group/individual performance assessment that I found on PT. I join each group at least twice during their discussion time to hear what they're saying, to informally assess them, and to keep them on task. I started my literature circles using stories from the basal because they were short and we just reread the story over and over each day with a different purpose, i.e. conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, character traits. This helped them see the story from many perspectives which helps increase comprehension and stamina. Also, again vespergirl is on target with starting with a brief discussion before students can successfully meet for 20-30 minutes. Keep trying, it is truly a very effective method of reading instruction!
