We do a lot with coloring grids. I have masters that have a variety of squares. Some are wholes, others are divided into tenths, hundredths, even thousandths. We do a lot of representing specific amounts by coloring and cutting out models(ex. fifty-six hundredths). Then we'll write the name three ways: words, fraction, and decimals. After students really have the hang of this, we do comparison by gluing two of these colored models next to each other, naming, and using greater than, less than, and equals symbols.
My question...do they really understand fractions? If not, you may need to backtrack.
