I second the Hank Zipper book

It's called Niagra Falls, or Does It? And it's all about Hank Zipper on his FIRST day of FOURTH grade. Kind of a perfect fit, isn't it?! Though it isn't a picture book, the first 2 chapters are a perfect day 1 read aloud, and I think that it will only take a week to finish the entire book.
I plan on using the Mark Teague book How I Spent My Summer Vacation for a first week read as well, most likely for Reader's Workshop.
