Before school started I sent a postcard to my students and told them on the first day of school to bring in 5 things in a bag that were special to them and showed what was important in their lives. We read the poem together in class before we started sharing, and I gave each child their own copy.. I did half the class the first day and half the second day. I took a picture of each child holding up their special things. The kids really were excited about it. I also had a bag with my special things to share. I went first to model the activity.
