Have you seen the Making Words books by Patricia Cunningham (I think)? They are pretty self explanatory and would give your students a good foundation in how words work. The most difficult part is having the letters needed to do each lesson. Your students should be old enough to make their letter cards by printing the letters needed on a blank piece of paper or card stock. I buy index cards when cheap and cut them into fourths or smaller. I just keep a container of the blank letter cards available so the kids can make their letters. There is also a book called Word Ladders, I believe. It has the students think of a word given the clues they provide. The clues are a brief definition and changing some aspect of the word that was started at the bottom of the ladder. My kids like the challenge of these but aren't able to do them independently so having an adult there to help would be great.
