    Beginning Centers

We just began centers last year around October for the first time in Kindergarten. (It was my first year, so it was all new to me).

This year, I want to definitely start my literacy centers sooner, so we can get the routine down and begin reinforcing what we are learning. I am not quite sure, but I might start centers the 2nd or 3rd week. We will not do the separate reading groups until later. They need the basic skills of centers, first. Those two or three weeks I will have SIMPLE activities like play-doh, visual discrimination type activities, puzzles, fine motor skills, etc. We will explain what to do when you don't remember the directions or if you finish early. We will also learn the rotation system (we do just one a day, 5 a week- I assign them to the centers, rather than them choosing). A big thing to learn is how to put things away and clean up after centers, so that will definitely need to be a focus area.

Once they have mastered the system without me too much, we will begin reading groups, and they will begin learning the procedures for me being inaccessible during that time.
