    Window Shopping

    Clip to ScrapBook

The items you can see face on are the ones you pay most attention to in stores. That's why companies pay more for the endcaps of supermarket aisles.

It's the same in libraries - the featured books are not spine out, they're face out to draw your interest. In the classroom, it's part that, drawing the kids interest. Kids are visual beings and turning their heads sideways to read the title of a book isn't going to pull them into that book the same way looking at its cover full on will.

It's also about being able to more easily categorize and separate them by having containers. You can label the container and the books with stickers, numbers, letters, whatever and it's really simple to return books to the right place.

That being said, I think most of my colleagues don't sort *all* their books by reading level, but also sort a large portion by genre/topic. Bins and baskets help with that as well.

This was my 5th grade classroom. My library ad leveled books genre books.
