    knew each other too since most of them have been together several years, but I found that they don't necessarily know each other, or much about each other's families. They still enjoyed the getting to know you activities.

    Don't worry about the teachers that laugh and say "we don't do it like this." This is your room, your year--you do what you need to do! Sometimes they may mean it encouragingly, sometimes they've done it so much that they can wing it, but I don't wing it. I feel that my first two years have been much better than they would have been because I planned out what to do in detail (and had extra activities just in case!).

    Your first days truly set the tone for the year. If you wing it now, they can tell, and if you need to be more structured later it will be more difficult.

    The motto for working with students is, "If you're not prepared for them, they WILL be prepared for you!"
