    phone calls home

i teach inner city and many of my, well, MOST of my parents do not have email. heck, when i try to call home, i usually stumble on disconnected phone numbers on a regular basis too.

i call home fairly frequently- i use my cell in my classroom. my kids get calls for behavior issues (not nit picky things- i mean kicking walls, major tantrums, etc) as well as "i just wanted to you to know that tasia was the ONLY kid today who knew all her subtraction facts!!!!" for behavior, i've been known to whip out the phone mid-lesson to stop a tantrum (yes, i had some 'issues' in my room last year)

my parents feel free to call my cell as well. and one or 2 do. this is pretty much the norm in my building. i was hesitant at first but feel comfortable with it now. my principal is BIG on school to home communication and it works for us.

most times for missing homework, i send home a note and have the student bring it back SIGNED. but if it gets to where it is really bringing down a grade, i call. i don't want my parents blind sided by a big drop in a grade.

so as you can see, teachers run the gamut. if i were you, i'd see what others in your building do. my son's school almost never calls home. but if i never called home, i'd be called on the carpet for it.

    good luck!
