I teach in a Catholic school and I would have to say that one big advantage over the public schools in my area is a small staff. We only have 9 teachers in the whole school. Everyone helps each other out. My children attend a public school, and last year when I attended a Literacy Night, one of the teachers commented to me that the school was so big, that they never even saw the teachers in the other wing. I have never taught in the public schools, but can just tell you observations as a parent. The school is such a maze of halls and people. Over 700 in my children's school. There are many other advantages I see. The kids all know each other since for the most part, they have attended the same school and been in the same "class" for the duration of their elementary school/Jr. High years. They forge strong friendships and a lot of acceptance for those who struggle with learning difficulties. That is not to say that there are no discipline issues, but I think they are less magnified. I guess my overall input here is the plus of strong ties and friendships you can make with the staff and studentbody. My school is small enough that I frequently bump into former students and they still give me a hug! It really does make a difference in the overall year. I love teaching in a private school.
