    Science Ideas

    Hi Beachbumteach,

I am a new teacher in my second year of teaching. This year I am teaching science and social studies and am very excited. I am going to implement an IAN in science and social studies. Here is a link to a PowerPoint presentation to show to students (after you modify to include your information) that shows exactly what it is and how it should look, including student samples.

Last year I had a new student who kindly gave me her Math IAN and ideas sprouted from there. I have not received my schedule yet but was told by my principal that I would have science for 3 days and ss for 2 days. Does your district use curriculum maps? If not you can www.polk-fl.net, click on the teacher tab and scroll down and the curriculum maps are listed on the right hand side. When you get into the specific map...say for matter...there are essential questions that students should be able to answer at the end of the lesso...near the bottom, there are also additional resources like discovery streaming clips, Magic School Bus videos and graphic organizer ideas.

I am planning my lesson plans in this format...

E - Essential Question (Big Idea) - What is a liquid?
A - Activator - This is where I would show a discovery streaming clip...or an interesting "hook" to excite them about the topic.
T - Teach/Model - Introduce the big idea, build background knowledge (use a thinking map), introduce vocab, have them draw pictures in their IAN about what a liquid looks like, how is it different from a solid...I may also have centers.
S - Summarize - I have a "Ticket Out the Door" poster by the door. They fill out a sticky note...I give them a prompt and they write it down and answer it (How is a liquid different than a solid?)

Sorry that this was such a long response...got started and couldn't stop... :)
