1. Do bulletin boards 2. Decorate outside your room - I usually display the kids names on the wall outside the door. I do this with with the bulletin board decoration and as a typed class list. 3. Make name tags to wear for more than one day. I use the hard sleeve baseball card covers that you can get at a baseball card store. Sometimes you can find them at Walmart. They need to be the hard plastic ones. Then I get an index card and put a cute name tag sticker on it. When I get my list, I write the child's name and punch a hole through the top. Then I add a piece of yarn. I do not send these name tags home. I use them each day until I've got names down. 4. Our school has lunch numbers so I write the lunch number under their name. I usually write the number on top of the plastic because they are given to us last minute. 5. If a child rides a bus at dismissal, I either have bus stickers or laminated bus tags that I have them wear daily with their name and bus number on them. 6. Name tags on tables and cubbies. I start with first name only. 7. Make sure you have your rules posted. 8. Have your discipline plan ready. If it is a chart, have it up. 9. You may want to hang a poster with the kid's birthdays. 10. You will need to prepare a grade book. If you don't have to take grades, you still are responsible for taking attendance in your book. 11. Have a basic info sheet for the parents to fill out for you on how their child gets home at the end of the day. Also have a place on the form where the parent can put if the child will be going home a different way on the first day. 12. When kids bring their supplies, never give them their scissors and glue right away. This will allow you to show them how they are used. 13. Best advice that I ever got was to be strict (firm) from the beginning because you can let up during the year. If you aren't firm from the get go, it is hard to get control of them after that. Also, it is best to be consistent. It makes a world of difference. I hope this helps you! Good luck, I'm sure you will do great!!! :)
