    Subs

The thing that makes or breaks a good sub for me is whether or not they read my notes! I usually leave very detailed lesson plans and information that they need to know about certain students. Two years ago I had a very difficult child that had severe behavior problems (especially with subs). Well, the sub ignored the WHOLE PAGE I wrote about him and how to deal with him, and you know what? It was an awful day for everyone! Nothing got accomplished! The principal asked her if I had written out anything for her about him and looked through what I left and there it was... My page on how to handle him and what to do in case of problems! This was also a retired teacher who thought she knew everything she needed about classroom management and admitted she didn't think she needed to read through everything that I had written out. Obviously the principal was not happy with her since I had given her plenty of warning on how to handle things and neither was I when I came back to find out they had done virtually none of the work I had planned for that day. She was never asked to come back. :(

Other than that, I think you need to be up front with the kids from the beginning and let them know your expectations. Also, if you tell them that you've been a teacher for years they will also be more likely to respect you and take you seriously.

I also appreciate when subs leave good notes about the day. I don't need every little detail, but just how the day went. I'm fine if subs have to stray from the lesson plans or don't get everything done, just a note telling me.
