I did something really productive these last 3 weeks of school. First of all, I used Regie Routman's Kids Poems(I highly recommend this book!) to give my students lots and lots of models of other children's poems. Then I had the children write poems every day for about 2 weeks. Each day I read some of the poems in Regie's book and many of the children imitated the patterns of the poems. I was really doubtful that her method would work, but it was amazing! The children loved reading other kids' poems! Then I had them choose their all-time favorite poem that they had written and I took them and typed them up and made an anthology of their poems. Then I copied the anthology for each child to have his own copy and then tomorrow, our last day of school, instead of watching a silly movie all morning each child will illustrate the poem anthology. The children are so excited AND it gave them such motivation to write these last few weeks of school!:)
