I am student teaching in 3rd grade and we made books for each child. We have 20 students so we got 21 different colors of cardstock paper and cut them into fours. We assigned a color to each student and every morning passed out 2 colors. The students had to write something nice and positive on the pieces of paper. Things such as "I appreciate that you . . . or "You are really good at ___ and that helps me ____" etc. Anyway when we were done each student had 19 pieces of the same colored paper and each one had something nice written on it by a classmate. I then made a cover out of the last color of cardstock with each childs name on it. Hole punched all the pages and tied them together. The students werent' aloud to read the comment until the grandparents came in and they read them together with their grandparent. It took a while with us because we did 2 a day but with 5th grade you could probably do it a lot quicker. The kids and grandparents both really enjoyed the books and it was a great way to build some barely budding friendships in the class.
