1. I never had students turn in things at their own pace. They always passed in their papers and I collected them all at once. A student would immediately let me know if someone in their row didn't turn in an assignment. That way there was no doubt ("I know I turned it in" implying that I lost their papers). 2. I typically did not collect or take HW for a grade, but I would sometimes collect it at random when students began to show a lax attitude towards completing it. When I saw that 5-6 students hadn't completed the work, I'd collect the pages for a small grade. If they hadn't done it, they had to turn in the empty page or a piece of looseleaf that said "I didn't do this assignment." That paper would be included in the packet that went home to be signed and returned, and it would have a 0/5 or whatever at the top. That would usually put a stop to the behavior and the attitude. Much more effective than our demerit system, because the parents didn't like seeing a paper with a zero.
